Tracking the Legislature

Keeping up with Arkansas State Legislation and Legislators

General Assembly
The 87th General Assembly of 2009 ended its session in April . The links to the following pages are still useful, as you can see all the bills that were introduced and the Act numbers that are assigned a bill that was passed and approved by the Governor. You can also look up a bill that you hear about and see what it says. The actual members of the legislature and their committee assignments will change, as there will be another election before the Legislature is in session again. We will reactivate these links for the current session when that occurs.

General Information on How a Bill becomes law:

In general, bills can be introduced in either the House of Representatives or Senate, where they are first assigned to an appropriate Committee. This is where to start following a bill you care about. You can also see who is on the Committee that is considering a bill. If its someone from your district, express your opinion to them. If it is voted out of Committee (do pass), then the full House (or Senate) could pass it. Then it goes to the other branch of the General Assembly where it is passed or modified, then to a Joint Committee to resolve differences, then passed again by both houses, signed (or not) by the Governor, becomes law and is assigned an Act # which is then integrated (codified) into a system of all state laws called the Arkansas Code. Friends may take positions on legislation but not legislators.
